I am posting a copy of the volunteer and information letter that is going home to all families this week. The actual letter is hard to miss: bright yellow (actually "Goldenrod")

Hello Parents and Guardians,

This year, please mark Friday, November 6, 2009 from 6:30 – 8:30p.m. on your calendar for
NOVEMBER NONSENSE

Most of you know “something” about George Street’s NOVEMBER NONSENSE… for those of you new to the school this year, you may have heard about this event since it is much anticipated, well-attended, and holds a reputation all on its own.

NOVEMBER NONSENSE is George Street Middle School’s Annual Family Fun Night and is a huge highlight for students, parents, staff, and also represents the biggest and only fundraising event of the Home and School Association. Funds raised are directed to educational purchases and projects for students and staff such as sound systems for classrooms, projectors, cafeteria tables, music/band, sports and many more.

This year’s NOVEMBER NONSENSE promises to bring back the popular attractions that everyone loves. There will be lots to keep you entertained and it is truly a great way to support your kids and your school. As in the past we will be holding a silent auction during the evening.

NOVEMBER NONSENSE does involve a planning committee and a large team of volunteers. On the back is an information sheet listing all volunteer possibilities. A small amount of time (1 hour) and effort on the part of many will go a long way. Please take a few moments to see how you can contribute to this school event. Keep in mind that older siblings make great volunteers. Volunteers also receive free admission to the event. Homeroom teachers will be asking students for the returned forms, so please try to return them promptly.

If you are interested in joining the planning committee, it’s not too late. Please check your voice messages to hear when our next meeting will be or contact Karen Wishart (H&S President) at 454-0463 or send her an email at nwishart@nb.sympatico.ca. On behalf of George Street Home and School, thank you in advance for your support.

To parents who own and/or manage a Fredericton business: please consider donating an item, service or gift card to the November Nonsense Silent Auction. Contributors are prominently recognized at the November Nonsense event and on the school website throughout the year. Donated items can be dropped off at the office anytime.

Please ensure this volunteer response form (back of this letter) is returned by: Wednesday, October 21, 2009

Home and School

The GSMS home and school association is a parent volunteer group. The H&S has 2 main mandates:
1) to raise funds to support the school
2) to receive information about the school.

In the past the H&S has raised money that has funded a number of initiatives in the school. Some examples are: FM sound systems in a number of classrooms that amplifies the teacher’s voice, a ceiling mounted in-focus machine in the River room, hush-ups for the classroom chairs (look like tennis balls, makes the room quiet), 10 laptops for the library which has greatly improved our computer lab.

Along with providing the school with many extras that have helped improve student learning, the monthly H&S meetings provide parents with an opportunity to speak directly with one of the school’s vice-principals about the “goings-on” at the school. Many parents have noted that this regular contact makes them feel more connected to the school community.

We meet once per month except before the November fundraiser when we meet a bit more often.

Our first meeting will take place on Wednesday September 30 from 6:30-7:30 in the school’s boardroom.

Please join us!

November Nonsense Wrap up

November 21st marked yet another fun and successful November Nonsense night thanks to the many volunteers––students, parents, siblings, teachers, teacher interns––who made the event possible. Activities ranged from face-painting to playstation games to the ever-popular dunk tank. The cake, pop, and chip walks were a big hit, and parents were able to relax and catch up with each other at the parents’ café. The raffle and silent auction were the mainstay of the fundraising effort, and special thanks go to everyone, including the many local businesses, who donated food or silent-auction items. Congratulations to Bruce Aubin, winner of the raffle item, an iPod touch! The GSMS Home & School Association raised about $8500, which will be used to enhance student life at George. This year’s purchases will include a ceiling-mounted in-focus machine for the River Room.
